Mud Pump by Drillbuilders

What is a mud pump?

A mud pump is a reciprocating positive displacement pump used to circulate drilling fluid through the drill string and back to surface. It moves mud from the tank, down the drill pipe, across the bit and up the annulus, carrying cuttings with it and maintaining hydrostatic pressure in the borehole.

Drillbuilders mud pumps are selected and configured specifically for water well, exploration and geotechnical drilling. Flow, pressure and power are matched to each rig so the circulation system runs efficiently without overloading the engine or wasting fuel.

Core Functions

-Cooling the Drill Bit

Drilling fluid cools and lubricates the bit to prevent overheating and reduce wear, helping maintain consistent penetration.

-Lifting Drill Cuttings

Mud carries cuttings away from the bit and transports them to the surface so the bottom stays clean and drilling remains efficient.

-Maintaining Bore Stability

Proper mud pressure supports the borehole walls, preventing collapse and other issues in weak or fractured formations.

-Controlling Fluid Loss

Mud helps seal permeable zones and reduces fluid loss into the ground, protecting both the formation and the drilling process.

Core Applications

-Water Well Drilling

Used to support clean circulation, pressure control and cuttings removal during agricultural, municipal and industrial well work.

-Geological Drilling

Provides stable fluid flow for core recovery, helps clear cuttings and maintains bore stability during mineral or soil sampling.

-Construction Drilling

Supports circulation on projects such as foundations, anchors, tunnels and civil works requiring controlled drilling and pressure.

-Irrigation Boreholes

Ensures stable flow for irrigation wells and general engineering work, improving hole cleaning and overall drilling efficiency.

Mud Pump Types: Duplex and Triplex

1

 Duplex Mud Pumps

Duplex pumps use two pistons to move drilling fluid with steady force. They offer simple, proven performance and are well suited for smaller rigs, moderate flow rates and projects where easy field maintenance is an important priority.

2

 Triplex Mud Pumps

Triplex pumps use three pistons to deliver smoother, more efficient mud flow. They provide higher pressure in a compact frame and are ideal for deeper wells, demanding formations and drilling operations that require consistent circulation.

MUD PUMP MODELS AT A GLANCE

BW450 hydraulically driven mud pump for a drilling rig

BW450 Mud Pump — Hydraulically Driven · 450 L/min

Runs straight off your rig's own hydraulics — no second engine to fuel or service. At 450 litres a minute it keeps a clean hole on most water-well and exploration work, and it is compact enough to bolt onto the rig you already run. Valves, liners and pistons you can reach and replace in the field.

BW850/2 engine driven mud pump, 850 litres per minute at 20 bar

BW850/2 Mud Pump — Engine Driven · 850 L/min @ 20 bar

Brings its own power — 850 litres a minute at 20 bar (600 L/min at 30 bar) for deeper holes, bigger diameters and heavier mud. Portable and self-contained, so you position it where you want and run it with any rig or crew. Built from the same field-serviceable parts for fast turnaround far from a workshop.

Mud Pump FAQs

Which mud pump fits my drilling rig?

If your rig has spare hydraulic capacity, the BW450 hydraulic mud pump runs straight off the rig's own hydraulics with no separate engine to fuel or service. If you want a standalone pump you can move between rigs and sites, the engine-driven BW850/2 brings its own power.

What flow rate do I need for borehole drilling?

For most water-well and exploration holes, 450 litres per minute keeps the hole clean. For deeper holes, larger diameters or heavier mud, step up to the BW850/2 — 850 L/min at 20 bar, or 600 L/min at 30 bar.

Are these mud pumps in stock in South Africa?

Yes. Both the BW450 and the BW850/2 are in stock at our Mokopane, Limpopo workshop and ready for inspection. Prices on enquiry.

Do you supply spares and service for your mud pumps?

Yes. Valves, liners and pistons are field-serviceable and kept in stock, and Drillbuilders has manufactured and supported drilling equipment since 1999.
